Homemade Tartar Sauce has as few as 3 ingredients (mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish or sweet pickles and capers), or you can make a deluxe version by adding herbs and spices like dill, chives, and garlic.
Even though this recipe is made with reduced fat mayonnaise, it can have more calories than some prepared tartar sauces that are mostly water and vinegar. You can reduce the number of calories by using a low fat or nonfat mayonnaise, but the flavor of low fat mayonnaise is usually inferior and they are thickened with gums and other ingredients. Even reduced fat mayonnaise has ingredients not found in regular mayonnaise.
Ingredients you may want to avoid in prepared tartar sauces include:
- High fructose corn syrup
- Gums
- Artificial flavors
- Natural flavors
- Preservatives (potassium sorbate, calcium disodium EDTA)
Nutrition Information
Nutrition information is based on using reduced fat olive oil mayonnaise with about 50 calories per tablespoon (15 ml). Full fat mayonnaise has about 100 calories per tablespoon.
