Serving Size:
2 tablespoons (30ml)
Full-fat tartar sauce has 100 or more calories per tablespoon. My original tartar sauce recipe made with reduced fat mayonnaise has about 95 calories per 2 tablespoon serving.
The number of calories can be reduced even further by replacing half of the mayonnaise with low-fat (2% fat) Greek or natural yogurt. Of course, you can adjust the ration of mayonnaise to yogurt to suit your taste.
It takes only minutes and few ingredients to make homemade tartar sauce for a fraction of the cost of prepared sauce made with water and gums.
This recipe has about the same number of calories as the prepared tartar sauce pictured below. By making your own, you avoid:
- High fructose corn syrup
- Gums
- Artificial flavors
Cook’s Tip
Nutrition information is based on using reduced fat olive oil mayonnaise with 45 calories per tablespoon and low fat (2%) Greek yogurt.
Additions
- Dill
- Chives
- Garlic or garlic powder
- Onion or onion powder
