Two 5.5" (pre-baked) corn tortillas
Tostadas are an open faced taco served on a crisp corn tortilla.
Store bought corn tortillas are very low sodium compared to flour tortillas with 10mg or less sodium per tortilla. Fried corn tortillas sold for tostadas can have up to 20 times the sodium of fresh tortillas.
You can deep fry tortillas (the traditional method), but if you are concerned about calories an alternative is “oven frying” fresh corn tortillas for tostadas.
This method is the same as oven fried tortilla chips.
While oven frying doesn’t produce quite the same texture, it deduces the number of calories by 13 to 30 calories per tortilla.
Cook’s Tip
If you are baking in batches, spray tortillas just prior to baking to reduce oil absorption and calories.
Ingredients
- 10 fresh corn tortillas (white or yellow)
- Vegetable cooking spray
Method of Preparation
Step 1
Place oven racks in oven lower middle and preheat to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2
Place tortillas on baking sheets in a single layer without overlapping. Spray 1 to 2 seconds with cooking spray. Turn tortillas over and spray the other side. Bake 15 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. If you are using a conventional oven, switch and rotate baking sheets half through the baking time for even browning. Serve warm.
