There are several ways to make garlic toast:

  • Rubbing fresh garlic across the surface of toasted bread
  • Combining minced fresh garlic with butter or margarine to form a spread
  • Combining minced roasted garlic with butter or margarine to form a spread

This garlic toast recipe uses garlic powder (not garlic salt) and butter or margarine. Herbs like oregano, thyme or rosemary, and spices like cayenne powder can be added for flavor.

Garlic toast can be made using any good quality homemade bread, or store bought artisan, Italian, or French bread. The number of calories will vary depending on bread size and thickness and amount of butter used. So use the nutrition values as a guide. Store bought breads can also be high in sodium.

Garlic toast differs from garlic bread. Garlic bread is made using a whole loaf sliced in half, spread with the garlic/butter mixture, re-assembled, wrapped in aluminum foil and heated until the bread has warmed through.

Cook’s Tip

Frozen sliced bread can be used without thawing. Add 2 to 3 minutes to toasting time.


  • Artisan, Italian or French bread, sliced 1/2 inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) butter or margarine
  • Garlic power to taste
  • Dried oregano (optional)
  • Cayenne pepper (optional)

Method of Preparation

Step 1

Set oven or toaster oven on broil with rack 5 to 6 inches from heating element.

Step 2

Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice. Liberally sprinkles with garlic powder to taste. Sprinkle with oregano and cayenne pepper is desired.

Step 3

Broil 4 to 8 minutes or until golden brown Serve immediately.
