Homemade Tartar Sauce requires as little as 3 ingredients (mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish or sweet pickles and capers), or you can make a deluxe version by adding herbs and spices like dill, chives, and garlic.

This recipe is higher in calories than some prepared tartar sauces that are primarily water and vinegar. You can reduce the number of calories by using a low fat or nonfat mayonnaise, but the flavor of low fat mayonnaise is usually inferior and they are thickened with gums and other ingredients. Even reduced fat mayonnaise has ingredients not found in regular mayonnaise.

  • Artificial flavors

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240 ml) reduced fat mayonnaise
  • 1-2 tablespoon (15-30 ml) capers rinsed and chopped
  • 1-2 tablespoon (15-30 ml) sweet pickle relish or minced sweet pickles

Method of Preparation

Step 1

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and stir until uniform on color and texture. Adjust the amount of capers and relish to taste.
