Americans love iced coffee. But unlike iced tea, many iced coffees are loaded with sugar, calories and saturate fat. One 13.7 oz. (400 ml) bottle of prepared coffee you can buy chilled and ready to drink or at room temperature to chill at home or serve over ice has between 250 and 300 calories per serving.
A 16 oz. (475 ml) serving of Starbuck’s® caramel Frappuccino® has 420 calories, 9 grams of saturated fat and 66 grams of sugar (about 12.5 tsps.). That’s 2 days worth of sugar in one 16 oz. drink.
This homemade version has half the calories, saturated fat and sugar without sacrificing flavor. Of course, you can adjust the flavor to taste by adding more caramel or other flavors and more sugar depending on the type of coffee you brew. Double strength drip coffee is weaker than espresso.
Depending on the ingredients you use, sugar comes from four sources; milk, whipped cream, caramel and added sugar.
The simplest version is chilled coffee with milk, cream or half & half. Adding vanilla extract or other flavorings adds about 12 calories per teaspoon due to the alcohol. Unless you are making enough for your family or a party, you only need a dash of extract.

Additional or Substitute Ingredients
Add any of the following ingredients to taste. For the cinnamon stick, add it to the hot coffee with other ingredients and remove before serving.

- Any liquor
- Chocolate syrup
- Cinnamon stick

- Dilute coffee to taste. Especially if drinking chilled without ice.
- Adjust the ratio of coffee to milk to taste.
- Adjust flavoring to taste.
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) espresso or 1 cup (240 ml) double strength coffee
- 3 teaspoons (15 ml) sugar or to taste
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold water
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) caramel sauce
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup (30 - 60 ml) prepared or fresh whipped heavy cream
- Ice cubes (optional)
Method of Preparation
Make coffee or espresso. Pour into a heat proof glass or mug. Flavor with sugar and stir in about 2 tsp (10 ml) of caramel. Refrigerate until cold.
Use water to dilute espresso to taste. Dilute coffee if desired. Stir in milk to taste. Add ice if desired. Top with whipped cream and remaining caramel sauce. Serve immediately.
