    About 1-ounce (30g) beef filling

This simple recipe requires two ingredients: ground meat and prepared salsa. You can use red or green salsa for the filling.

Packaged taco seasoning mixes have 1,800 to 2,800 mg of sodium. You can reduce the amount of sodium by 50 percent or more by substituting low sodium (less than 150 mg/serving) salsa or homemade salsa.

This recipe can be used for taco salad, tostadas, and enchiladas.

Nutrition Information

Nutrition information is for 1-ounce of ground beef in one large taco. Total calories per taco depends on the type of tortilla shell (flour or corn) and the toppings (lettuce, cheese, tomato, guacamole, etc.).

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) extra lean ground beef, chicken, or turkey
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup (120-180 ml) tomato salsa, red or green sauce

Method of Preparation

Step 1

In a medium sauce pan or frying pan or medium heat, saute the meat until mostly browned. A little pink is acceptable at this point.

Step 2

Add the salsa, stir to thoroughly combine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer 5 to 10 minutes stirring occasionally until the liquid has evaporated. Serve immediately or cool and refrigerate.
